Long time no see! With all the bad news lately, hopefully a little Walrus news will be refreshing. Unfortunately, it's not all good news here either, but it's nowhere near as bad as some of the recent World news... First the good news: The Walrus will be performing this Friday night, Oct. 5, 7-8:30 pm for free at Red Square on the WWU campus. As part of the annual Homecoming celebration, we will perform, followed immediately by an exciting pyrotechnic performance by Cirque de Flambe. On Saturday we will play for the 'tailgate party' at Civic Field before the football game. The game starts at 1pm, and we perform at 11:30 am. Then, a couple of weeks later, The Walrus returns to the Wild Buffalo House of Music (our favorite club to play!) on Friday, Oct. 19. Don't miss these events, because they *may* be the among the last times we can perform certain songs -- such as "Bohemian Rhapsody!" For the first time in nearly 3 years, The Walrus will be experiencing a change of personnel. Dave Cowan has been with us since early 2000, and we are sad to hear he will be leaving the band whenever we can find a "replacement." As you probably know, Dave is much more than just a bass player. He plays keyboards, effectively carrying many of our strongest tunes. (Bohemian Rhapsody, Good Vibrations, Good Day Sunshine, and many others.) He has been a valuable asset to the band and will be sorely missed. Obviously we can't "replace" him. But we can and will find a new bass player, and the Walrus will live on. Until that happens, Dave will continue to bring his talents into the band and into your ears. We have no idea how long the search will take, but we guess a couple of months. So come see us in the meanwhile! -- Chuck Dingee | The Walrus PO Box 2681 | 360.647.5106 Bellingham WA 98227 | chuck@tusktusk.com From chuck@tusktusk.com Tue Oct 16 13:40:07 2001 Return-Path: Delivered-To: walruslist@nas.com Received: from femail7.sdc1.sfba.home.com (femail7.sdc1.sfba.home.com [24.0.95.87]) by cleese.nas.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 591143653F for ; Tue, 16 Oct 2001 13:39:06 -0700 (PDT) Received: from [192.168.1.100] ([24.16.244.13]) by femail7.sdc1.sfba.home.com (InterMail vM.4.01.03.20 201-229-121-120-20010223) with ESMTP id <20011016203905.GFMI20013.femail7.sdc1.sfba.home.com@[192.168.1.100]> for ; Tue, 16 Oct 2001 13:39:05 -0700 Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Sender: webmagic@mail.nas.com (Unverified) Message-Id: Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 13:39:03 -0700 To: walruslist@tusktusk.com From: Chuck Dingee Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Subject: [Walruslist] The Walrus at the Wild Buffalo this Friday! It's possible that the Sofa Kings will rise again someday, but this Saturday will clearly be the band's last performance at Anna's Kaddy Shack. So come on down at 9 p.m. There's no cover. Anna's has been bought by the owner of the Royal, and he intends to do a major remodel (including to the stage and sound system) and rename it The Fairhaven as of Feb. 1. (FYI: Starting Feb. 18, I will be hosting an Open Mic at The Fairhaven every Monday. And, rumor has it, The Walrus will be performing there in March.) For those of you who don't know who the Sofa Kings are, a little history is in order. For about 20 years, I performed with violinist Guy Mulford, who died a year ago. Since 1993, we called ourselves the Haole Boys. When we started playing regularly at Anna's, Ranger Kidwell-Ross backed us up on drums. We enjoyed it, and when the Walrus was formed, Chris Harris and Joe Young started sitting in on bass and lead guitar. It wasn't long before the Haole Boys had a band .... When we lost Guy last year, we changed the name to the Sofa Kings, and that brings us up to today. This week's line-up will be Ranger on drums, Walt (new Walrus bassist) on bass, and Joe and I on guitars & vocals. It's not unheard of for various other Walrus players (and others) to show up and sit in for a set .... We get a chance to let our hair down and play songs that haven't become polished enough for the Walrus (or are somehow not appropriate) but are Sofa King fun to listen to or dance to. We hope you'll make it down for our send-off to Anna's and the Sofa Kings. (BTW: Anna isn't going anywhere. She will continue to work at The Fairhaven and coordinate music festivals.) Also, this month, besides hosting the Monday Open Mic at The Fairhaven, I am also hosting Wild Buffalo Open Mic on Wednesdays, and on March 30, Joe and I will perform as an acoustic duo at the Swinomish Casino in Anacortes. BELLINGHAM -- An unidentified psychic has predicted a record rock party Friday, May 24th at Wild Buffalo House of Music, with local Beatles' cover band The Walrus performing "Bohemian Rhapsody" there for the first time in seven months. In an exclusive interview with The Weekly Walrus News, the psychic also guaranteed that rockers who present a copy of this e-mail at the door Friday night will get $1 off the $8 cover charge. Sources say the music will begin at 9 p.m. The psychic predicted that Walrus fans will be shocked to find their favorite musicians performing without their usual stage monitors, preferring to wear in-ear monitors, which make the sound much better and eliminate feedback problems. Lead singers Chuck Dingee and Jamie Shea claimed, "We're not deaf. Aliens stole our stage monitors at our last gig." Fortunately, their voices were left intact. At 6:00 we perform at the Lopez Center, a really nice community center right in "downtown Lopez." This event is for all ages, and there will be a beer garden. If the weather holds up (and it is supposed to...) we will play outside in the pavilion. Later that night we'll head for the Galley where we'll play from 9:30 or so on into the night. I know many of you won't be able to make that one, but the following Friday, September 6 (Kathy's birthday!) we will have a Virgo Birthday Bash at Wild Buffalo House of Music in Bellingham. After Guy's death, we retired the name 'Haole Boys' and renamed it 'Sofa Kings.' We play a mix of music similar to that of The Walrus, with more emphasis on spontaneity and humor. The Open Mic scene in Bellingham is thriving. Every week I am blown away by the talented musicians that come and play. Each week we have a 'featured act' that gets to play a little longer than walk-in acts, and we 'pass the hat' for them. Wild Buffalo also has an Open Mic on Wednesdays, with a similar format, hosted by Andy "Badd Dog" Koch. This week Andy & I are featured at each other's Open Mic. Andy is the featured act at The Fairhaven on Monday, and I will be featured at Wild Buffalo Wednesday. Vernon in the afternoon and at the Fairhaven Pub and Martini Bar at night (thanks to a cancellation by the Beatniks). The Tulip Festival Street Fair is always a lot of fun for kids of all ages, and it's free. This is our third year in a row headlining it. We play at Pine Street Square in downtown Mt. Vernon from 1 to 2:15 pm, and again from 3:30 to 4:45 pm. (Don't be misled by the misprint in the Official Tulip Festival Guide that shows "Maggie's Fury" from 3:30-4:45.) If you come to the Tulip Fest event, here are some things to remember: 1. There are no tulip fields in downtown Mt. Vernon. Going to see the tulip fields is a whole different thing. It can take as long as 2-3 hours to go on that tour, so I don't recommend trying to do both in one day. Do the fields during the week if you can, when there's less traffic, or later in the day when the light is best for photos. 2. Allow some time to get to Mt. Vernon & find a parking spot. Traffic can be bad - and *do not* try to park far away and take one of the "Tulip Festival Shuttles." They are for tulip field tours, not the downtown street fair. I suggest getting off at the Kincaid exit and finding the nearest parking spot. It's a nice walk. There's plenty to do at the Street Fair. In between sets, we like to browse through several blocks of local vendors and artists from all over and get a bite to eat. And there is a (reportedly) very good trio playing before our 2 sets (12-12:45 and 2:30-3:15). Saturday night we are very excited to be playing at The Fairhaven Pub and Martini Bar. We'll play about 9:30-ish and you'll dance to your favorite tunes. And then we'll all drop into a little puddle after such a long day!
